Self-Assessment

The Self-Assessment process allows you to assess your skills, qualifications, and English language ability.

Once you have completed this form, please forward it with supporting documents including:

• Your passport copy(s) if applicable;
• A letter from your employer confirming their agreement for you to apply for a Skilled Migrant Visa;

English Language Skills

• You must meet the English language requirements to be eligible for a job in New Zealand.
• The minimum standard is that you can read, write and speak English with a level of competence sufficient to cope with everyday situations.
• People who have studied at an accredited tertiary institution and completed their study in English will qualify for exemption from the test.
• Some people may also be exempt from taking this test if they hold a temporary resident visa (TRV), student visa, or permanent residence visa (PRV).

New Zealand Qualifications

This enables students to prepare for tertiary study by assessing whether they have achieved the minimum competencies required by their chosen course of study before starting university or college studies.

Skilled Employment in New Zealand

• Engineer/Professional (including architects, surveyors, designers, and draughtspersons)
• Health professionals (including dentists, nurses, and midwives) or other health care professionals with specialist skills.

You must have at least five years’ work experience as either an engineer or professional that has included working on projects of national significance; higher education completed overseas; direct experience of working in engineering or design roles for at least two years before applying for settlement here; evidence of your ability to meet the requirements of applicable immigration laws when entering New Zealand – this includes evidence from employers showing they can hire qualified staff into positions similar to those available through job advertisements posted on The Immigration Department website . . .

Work Experience

Work experience is important. It should be relevant to the job you are applying for and it can be gained in a variety of ways, including overseas or at home.

Work experience temporarily is often more useful than work experience permanently because it allows you to build your skills, improve them and gain confidence through practical applications.

Age Points

Age points are awarded up to the age of 50. Each year of age is worth 1 point, up until the age of 40 when it becomes 10 points. After this point, you can earn 150 additional points per year (for example: if you’re 45 years old and have earned 350 points through your immigration application process).

Partner’s Skills

When it comes to partner’s skills, the NZ Immigration point system considers the following:

• Partner’s skills must be in the same field as your own. If you have a job offer in an area where your partner has no experience, then this will count against you. Your potential employer should also be able to confirm that there is no conflict of interest between yourself and your partner (for example, if they are both going into dentistry).
• Your partner’s skills must be at least three years of experience and at least NZQF Level 4 (or equivalent).

New Zealand Investment Funds

The New Zealand investment funds scheme is a great option for skilled workers who want to live in New Zealand on their terms.

If you have at least $1.5 million, the government will give you a visa if your investment is held for at least three years in New Zealand and it can be made in any form of property (such as shares or cash).
